Traffic Updates

There is going to be heavy traffic getting to and from Wanaka Airport from Good Friday through to Easter Sunday.  This will be on all roads leading to the airport from Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown.  The busiest times will be between 8.00am and 11am and then later in the day as people leave the airshow.

If you are heading to the airshow please make sure you leave early.  Gates open at the airshow at 7.30am with all ground exhibits, food courts etc operating by 8am.  The flying displays start at 10am.

If you need to get into or out of Wanaka at these peak times please consider the alternate route which will be signposted.

Coming from Wanaka:

Motorists should use the main SH6 out of Wanaka through the new Mt Iron roundabout and out to Wanaka Airport.  Once at the airport Traffic Management staff will direct you to the nearest free vehicle parking area.

Coming from Queenstown:

Traffic will be directed over the Crown Range Road.  On the outskirts of Wanaka motorsts will be directed down Riverbank road (be aware there are road works at the intersection of Riverbank and Ballantyne Roads).  The traffic will then go onto Faulks Road and finally onto Mt Barker Road where you will be directed into your car parking area.

Coming from Cromwell and Tarras:

Motorists not wanting to get to Wanaka Airport can take an alternate route into Wanaka.  Just after Luggate they can take a right turn onto Church Road and then go over the Red Bridge, up along Kane Road, Camphill Road to re-join SH6 to get back into Wanaka.  This alternate route will be highlighted on electronic traffic boards.

Please listen to instructions from our traffic management team.  Their main priority is to get everyone to where they want to get as quickly as is possible.  But there are going to be traffic delays so please plan for these.  The best advice we can give is to get out to the airport as early as possible.
