Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow 2026
The 2028 edition of the internationally-recognised Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow promises to be one for the ages as organisers look to celebrate the event’s 40th anniversary.
The 1988 airshow was the brainchild of the late Sir Tim Wallis, who along with his brother George, and members of the Wanaka Lions club joined forces to stage what was a very popular event attracting some 14,000 visitors.
Fast forward to 2028 and we’re expecting another crowd of more than 60,000 visitors from around the world over three days at Easter (April 14, 15 and 16).
While the final aircraft lineup won’t be confirmed until much nearer the event, Wanaka airshow organisers have a fine track record of bringing together an amazing line up from both around New Zealand and overseas. Modern air forces from around the region have also played a big role most years at Wanaka.
The aircraft displays will again be backed up by some impressive pyrotechnics including New Zealand’s largest ‘Wall of Fire’. On the ground Wanaka has plenty to keep everyone happy - leading NZ companies will be showing off the latest aircraft for sale while the Future of Aviation Expo continues to grow.
Warbirds Over Wanaka is also famous for it’s free community lake-side event late afternoon on the Friday of the airshow. Following the show at the airport all roads lead to the stunning Wanaka lakefront where thousands join together on the beach to watch aircraft perform against the stunning lake and mountain backdrop.
